FPS Buildings & Grounds notice re: snow on roofs

Because of the significant amount of snow fall this winter, the Framingham School Department is taking extra precautions to avoid potential roof collapse.

The Buildings and Grounds Department continually clears snow and debris from all roof drains, air intakes and vents on school roofs. This practice continues through the winter months to ensure water from snow melt and rain is able to run freely to all roof drains. On older buildings, large snow drifts are removed at high to low roof intersections to lighten snow load.

Due to the large accumulation of snow on school roofs the Framingham School Department has consulted with their roofing manufacturer, (TREMCO Inc.) and architect, (Russo Barr and Assoc.). We are following their advice and performing visual inspections looking for signs of stress or sagging.

It is not feasible to try and remove all snow from every roof, therefore we are addressing potential trouble areas and will perform further removal if, or when any structural stress were to be identified.

In addition, because safety for all is our foremost concern, the Framingham Fire Department and the Building Department would be notified prior to placing any personnel on a roof where a structural deficiency has been identified and the occupants of the building would be evacuated.

On behalf of the Buildings and Grounds Department,
Matt Torti, Director
